What Are THC Diamonds?

The THC diamond, or THCa diamond, is a highly concentrated form of cannabis extract with a predominantly crystalline structure.

THCa, the non-psychoactive precursor to THC, plays a key role in the potency and purity of cannabis diamonds. Once exposed to heat, though, the THCa turns into THC and gives you all the effects you know and love.

The actual appearance of weed diamonds is going to vary greatly depending on the manufacturer and how they chose to make the diamonds in the first place. Of course, all THC diamonds will share a crystalline structure, which has an appearance similar to a snowflake: no two diamonds are exactly alike.

Some THCa diamonds may be clear, while others may have a slight amber or yellow color. This depends on the extracts used, and whether or not terpenes or specific strains are present. (A clear THC diamond doesn’t necessarily mean
better.)

Though they may not look like your typical cannabis product, THC diamonds are fairly easy to work with and utilize. Most people enjoy dabbing their THC diamonds, though you could also sprinkle some on top of flower or vaporize your diamonds in a vape designed for concentrates.

How Are THCa Diamonds Made?

THCa diamonds can be made in a few different ways, depending on the manufacturer’s preferences and processes. However, two of the most commonly used methods are the closed-loop extraction method and the crystalline method.

Below, we’ve broken down what each of those methods entails and how they differ.

1. Closed-Loop Extraction Method

The closed-loop extraction method is a very popular technique for creating THC diamonds. This method involves using a complex closed-loop extraction system: a process designed to safely and efficiently extract cannabinoids from the cannabis plant itself.

To do this, professionals will start by placing the plant material into the extraction chamber. To extract cannabinoids and other compounds from the plant material, a solvent like butane or propane is added to the system.

This leaves behind a waxy, sauce-like substance that’s then purified and further processed to ensure that no impurities remain. This leaves behind a purer, more concentrated solution of cannabinoids — particularly THCa, in this case.

To help guarantee crystallization, the concentrate is then stored in a controlled environment with very specific temperature and pressure conditions. This helps create the crystal structure we know and love.

2. Crystalline Method

Another popular way of achieving THC diamonds is through winterization. First, the THC concentrate is extracted as it normally would be.

However, after this, the extract undergoes a series of filtration and cooling steps (hence “winterization”) to remove unwanted fats, lipids, and waxes. The winterized extract is then dissolved in a solvent and mixed thoroughly to guarantee an even distribution of THC.

From there, the substance is left in an environment that promotes the slow evaporation of the solvent itself. As the solvent evaporates, the THCa molecules gradually separate from the solution and form large crystalline structures. Thus, the result is the coveted THCa diamonds.

It’s important to note that both the closed-loop and crystalline methods are effective and offer good ways of producing THCa diamonds. It is a matter of preference as well as technology as to which solution is better.

THC Diamonds vs. THCA Diamonds: Is There a Difference?

Technically, yes, there is a difference between THC diamonds and THCa diamonds. THC diamonds, if advertised as such, are a type of concentrate that holds high percentages of delta-9 THC; you’ll typically find these at your local dispensary.

THCa diamonds, on the other hand, contain high amounts of the federally legal cannabinoid THCa. However, once exposed to heat, like when dapped or vaporized, the THCa cannabinoid changes to THC, creating practically the same results as THC diamonds. So, if you want to experience the psychoactive highs of THC, then you have to make sure to decarboxylate your THCa through heat exposure.

How to Smoke THC Diamonds

There are several ways to smoke THC diamonds, but dabbing is the most effective.

Here’s a quick, step-by-step guide to dabbing cannabis diamonds:

  1. Start by gathering your materials. You will need your wax diamonds, dab rig, torch, carb cap, and dab tool.
  2. Next, take your dab tool and try your best to get a small, crumb-sized diamond on the end of it. Set it down carefully.
  3. After this, take your torch and start heating up the banger (also called “nail”) of your dab rig; this is the part that resembles a bowl piece. Make sure it is glowing red when you are heating it up.
  4. Wait about 30 seconds or so for the banger to cool down. Then, grab your dab tool.
  5. Place your mouth on the mouthpiece of the dab rig and put the dab tool into the banger, placing the diamond right into the burning heat.
  6. While inhaling, use the dab tool to swirl around the diamond, ensuring it melts completely. As it turns into a liquid, it will eventually evaporate.
  7. Once you can’t inhale any longer, put down the dab tool and cover the banger with your carb cap, ensuring not to touch the banger with your fingers (or any part of your body, that is). Exhale.

And that’s it! You’ve officially smoked your THCa diamonds!

How Do Cannabis Diamonds Differ From Concentrates?

THC diamonds differ from other concentrates primarily in their structure. While many types of concentrates are more viscous and wax-like, diamonds are like crystals, quite distinct in their structure.

The actual process of creating cannabis diamonds is different from other concentrates because of the curation goal. Since THC diamonds require further purification to induce crystallization, these products take a bit more time and energy to curate. Other concentrates, like waxes or live resin, don’t have to go through these added end-stage steps.

Are THC diamonds decarboxylated?

Yes, THC diamonds are typically decarboxylated, while THCa diamonds are not.

If you’re buying federally legal THCa diamonds, these THCa products are not going to come activated. Instead, you have to decarboxylate them yourself through the process of dabbing, smoking, or vaporizing them.

However, you can also easily enjoy THCa in its raw form without decarboxylating it at all. The choice is yours.

Are THC diamonds hard?

Yes, THC diamonds are hard in texture. They often have a slightly glass-like appearance and are solid with their crystalline structures. The actual hardness can vary depending on the specific extraction and purification techniques that the professionals use, but, in general, THCa diamonds are solid and not malleable like other concentrates like wax, live resin, or badder.

Are THC diamonds potent?

Yes, THC diamonds are known for their high potency and purity. Due to their concentrated nature and high levels of THC, they are good options for users seeking powerful results for chronic conditions. In fact, some THC diamonds can have THC levels that reach 99% purity, making them some of the most potent cannabis products available.

Because of this high potency, though, these products are generally recommended for those with high tolerances and who have plenty of experience consuming THC.
